Frequently asked questions

Will my customers have to solve CAPTCHA puzzles?
No. Spambuster uses Google reCAPTCHA v3 by default, which scores every submission invisibly in the background — real customers never see a challenge. If you prefer a visible checkbox, you can switch any form to v2 checkbox mode. You control strictness with a threshold dial from 0.1 (lenient) to 0.9 (strict).
How is this different from “no-CAPTCHA” spam apps?
No-CAPTCHA apps replace Google’s scoring with their own heuristics. Spambuster keeps the proven Google reCAPTCHA engine — but makes it invisible, sets up the keys for you, and repairs its own configuration so it keeps working. You get Google-grade scoring without the Google console, the puzzles, or the maintenance.
Which forms does it protect?
Contact forms, newsletter signups, blog comments and product review submissions, login, account registration and password reset forms on Basic. Premium adds order and checkout form protection, plus honeypot traps and advanced bot detection.
Will it slow down my store?
No. The script loads reCAPTCHA only on pages where it finds a form that needs it, so a page without one never requests it, and DNS for the verification endpoints is pre-resolved so the check itself is fast. Pages without a form make zero requests to Google.
I heard it once broke checkout on the Dawn theme?
An older version conflicted with the checkout button in Shopify’s Dawn theme, most noticeably in Safari on macOS. That has been fixed and verified specifically against Dawn and macOS Safari — checkout now behaves exactly as it does without the app installed, and the fix is live for every store automatically.
How do I know it’s actually working?
The dashboard shows every submission with its spam score, running blocked counts per form and week-over-week trends. The event log records what was blocked and why — down to the score and the reason — and a weekly email summarises the numbers.
