What your customers see

Every line Spambuster can put in front of a customer, what it means, and what to do about it.

The short answer

Most customers see nothing at all: Spambuster checks them quietly and their message is sent. There are only a few things a customer can ever see, and each is below.

A line under your form about reCAPTCHA

This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.

That's ours. Spambuster hides Google's floating reCAPTCHA badge so it doesn't sit over your store, and Google asks for this line in its place.

Want different words? In Spambuster, open the language settings and turn on custom reCAPTCHA text. Keep the links to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms.

The customer presses Send and nothing happens

When Spambuster stops a submission it doesn't send the form, and the button works again. The customer sees no error message, so a real person just sees a form that didn't go.

What to do: open Spambuster, then Event Log, and find a Fail row at the time they tried. If it was a real customer, lower your spam threshold one step in Settings. How to read that row.

"Thanks! Your submission is under review."

Thanks! Your submission is under review.

The hidden trap field (the honey pot, on Premium) was filled in. People never see that field, so it's almost always a bot. Now and then a browser's autofill fills it for a real customer. The message is not sent.

What to do if a real customer saw it: in Spambuster's form settings, turn off Auto-block trapped submissions. The trap then only records what it catches and stops nothing. Write to us too: we'd like to know which browser did it.

An "I'm not a robot" checkbox

That form is set to reCAPTCHA's checkbox. The customer ticks it, sometimes picks some pictures, then sends. If you'd rather customers saw nothing, write to us and we'll move you to the invisible check together: it needs a different kind of reCAPTCHA key, so it's not a switch to flip on your own.

Add to cart, Buy it now or checkout is stuck

That isn't Spambuster. It never touches product forms, the cart or checkout. Another app or a recent theme change is the usual cause. Form not working? helps you find which.

For your developer: a line in the browser console

Spambuster: Submission blocked by spam protection

The same as "nothing happens" above, written for whoever is looking at the page's code. It comes with the form, the score and the threshold.

If our check can't run, because Google or our server is slow or down, the form is sent anyway. Spambuster never stops a customer because of a fault on our side.
